About the charity:
Tech Trust is a leading UK charity helping more than 33,000 charities increase their impact with digital technology. Since 2001, the charity has saved the charity sector in the UK over £200m. The charity further provides leadership in the digital information space through its online publications and news portal. The charity operates a trading subsidiary providing collection and settlement services to charities.
The charity is entirely self-sufficient from income generating by charitable trading activities and is not reliant on any grant funding. The charity is a company limited by guarantee.
Tech Trust is based in offices in Kings Cross and employs around 15 full time staff.
About the board:
The role of the board of trustees is vital to drive both strategic direction of the charity in an ever-changing technological environment and to ensure effective governance of the organisation. The board brings with it a wealth of senior experience from across many sectors helping to provide advice and assistance to the executive team.
The board meets quarterly at the offices of the charity – usually in the evening. The treasurer also currently heads a monthly Finance subcommittee (FSC) attended by the CEO and CFO.
About the role:
The current treasurer is retiring, and we seek a replacement treasurer Trustee. The accounting within the organisation is undertaken by a combination of the financial management within the organisation with some activities outsourced to a firm of accountants. This outsourcing is largely centred around the complex client account settlement activity generated by the charity’s financial services trading subsidiary. All of the management and financial reporting is currently prepared by the financial management within the charity (headed by a p/time qualified CFO) so the role of the treasurer is largely centred around providing a financial conduit between the executive management and the board.
Specifically, the role of the treasurer will be to ensure that the charity is compliant with company and charity law and that appropriate governance is applied to the finances of the organisation.
The treasurer is expected to help guide and support the board in the formulation of financial strategies, approval of budgets, accounts and other financial statements and have an appropriate understanding of the accounting procedures and key internal controls to assure the board of the charity’s financial integrity including ensuring that it has and is in line with its reserves policy.
The treasurer will be expected to attend the quarterly board meetings and chair the monthly FSC. Financial accounts and other reporting to the FSC and the board are currently prepared by the financial management within the charity, but the treasurer will be expected to speak to these documents at the board meeting.
In terms of personal skills and knowledge, the treasurer will ideally be a qualified accountant or be an individual with a very strong background in finance or financial management and again ideally have some experience in and understanding of the financial challenges facing charitable organisations.
