Fundraising video on a shoestring
The marketing communications manager at Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity explains how she used her mobile phone, editing software and fake snow to make a Christmas fundraising appeal video, featuring TV star and author David Walliams, on a budget.
Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity has revealed how it has made an eye-catching Christmas fundraising video, featuring author and TV star David Walliams, on a shoestring budget.
She explains that she made the video via her smartphone. An external mic and an editing app, which cost less than £100 between them, were also used.
Other budget costs including using fake snow and Christmas themed lighting.
Meanwhile, Walliams offered his time for the charity before a recent book signing at the Roald Dahl Museum.
It was lovely to meet David and his @HarperCollinsCh team @roalddahlmuseum on Saturday before his book signing to put this video together. All of us at Marvellous HQ really appreciate your support! https://t.co/SZKCWaPEIj

“I filmed the video on my iPhone 8 with an iRig Mic Lav lapel microphone, which costs £30-50,” explains Hewlett.
“I then edited it with LumaFusion, which is a paid for iOS app that costs around £20. The graphics are created with Canva (pro version) and the subtitles in company font are done in Premiere Pro, which I have at a charity rate of £5 a month.
“I bought some fake snow and we put some scrim material up with some fairy lights and I also have some lights that cost around £70 that are portable and use rechargeable batteries.”
The charity deploys specialist nurses to help seriously ill children. The video tells the story of 10-year-old Lara, who has a rare non-diagnosed condition and is one of four actors playing Tiny Tim in A Christmas Carol at The Old Vic Theatre.
Lara is being supported by one of the charity’s nurses Anna.
“What the charity has done for us is priceless,” said Lara’s mum.”We need Anna. She’s been at our side since and we haven’t looked back. Lara and Anna have a special bond, Lara is ready for anything now.”
One version of the charity video features Walliams introducing the footage of Lara, and a second, longer version without the author, is also being released.
