Charity launches emoji design competition
The public is being invited to take part in a competition to design and then vote for an emoji to celebrate the medium of sculpture.
Culture charity Art UK is inviting people to design an emoji that will be used across social media to celebrate sculptures.
The charity is inviting the public to design and then vote for a new emoji that celebrates the arts medium of sculpture. It will then become part of the objects category of the online emojis function and be a companion piece to existing sculpture emojis such as the Easter Island figures and New York’s Statue of Liberty.
A panel of judges including artists Cornelia Parker and Rana Begum as well as Yorkshire Scuplture Park Director of Programme Clare Lilley will review the entries after the deadline of Fridaay 9 August. A four-strong shortlist will then be created to put to the public vote via Art UK’s Twitter account.
The competition follows on from Art UK’s sculpture project that launched in February. This aims to create a free online photographic showcase of the UK’s publicly owned sculpture, seeing more than 100,000 works digitised and available via the Art UK website. Already more than 5,000 sculptures are already online.
“The competition supports Art UK’s mission to bring sculpture into our everyday lives. We hope it will inspire some great designs, more interest in sculpture and lively discussions about the art form,” said Art UK Director Andrew Ellis.
Between 2003 and 2012 Art UK successfully digitised more than 200,000 oil paintings from across the UK and since 2016 art work on paper such watercolours, prints and drawings have been added.
