Facebook pledges to match £1m Red Nose Day donations
The social media platform will match up to £1m worth of donations made to Comic Relief’s fundraiser.
Facebook has pledged to match £1m worth of donations made to Comic Relief via its platform on Red Nose Day (15 March).
Donations made in the UK from 8am on Red Nose Day will be matched by up to the value of £1m, says the social media platform, which waives fees for nonprofit fundraisers.
Facebook users can set up their own fundraiser on Facebook for Comic Relief and also donate directly from their news feed.
Red Nose Day will also be promoted in Facebook users’ news feeds in the run up to the event, to encourage further donations.
“Since Facebook launched its charitable giving tools, we have seen our community mobilise around causes they care about and raise millions of pounds for charities, for causes such as disaster relief, the environment and education,” said Anita Yuen, Head of Social Good Partnerships for Europe, Middle East and Africa, Facebook.
“Red Nose Day is an institution in the UK and Comic Relief is a charity which has helped so many thousands of people over the years.
“We’re happy that Facebook can support in their work and help even more people get involved by making fundraising and donating even easier.”
Red Nose Day is a UK wide fundraising event that culminates in a night of comedy and entertainment live on the BBC. The day involves a range of activities from workplace bake sales to fancy-dress fundraising in schools.
Other activity on the BBC has included a 24-hour joke reading LOL-athon with Radio 1 presenters Scott Mills and Chris Stark this week.
A dedicated fundraising page for the LOL-athon has been set up by Comic Relief. This details the impact different donation amounts can make, with £20 funding a webchat service for young men at risk of suicide and £50 helping two girls return to school after escaping a child marriage in Malawi.
