A charity donation app has launched, giving people the chance to donate to a good cause on behalf of friends to mark events such as a birthday.

The Thinking of You app lets people donate via their mobile in a number of ways, including sending a donation to the charity of a friend’s choice to mark an occasion such as a birthday or as a spontaneous gift.

The app also gives users the chance to set up fundraising events with a live feed, such as a charity run or bake sale.

Memory or legacy fundraising campaigns can also be set up and the app, which receives a 2.5% cut from donations, also has a function to allow users to make a direct donation to charities.

Charities already involved include Shelter, Stroke Association and mental health charity Time To Change. The Thinking of You app is also supported by the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF).

“We all want to be there for our friends and family, especially if we suspect they’re struggling with their mental health,” said Jo Loughran, Time to Change Director.

“Yet our research shows that people are still wary about reaching out. We worry about saying the wrong thing or somehow making the situation worse.

But showing support doesn’t have to be difficult or awkward. A message via text or an app can be enough to show you’re there and it can mean the world to the person on the receiving end.

“Thinking of You is an exciting breakthrough, a simple way for people to reach out while supporting some fantastic charities.”

CAF Chief Executive John Low added: “CAF’s mission is to support giving so we are always looking for ways to innovate and make it easy for people to give to causes close to their hearts.

“People give when they feel a close connection with a cause, so we are delighted to be working with Thinking of You to help them ensure that donations get to the charities that need them so much.”
