Online diversity tool for charities launches
The Diversity Excellence Standard has been launched to encourage charities to improve diversity and equality across their organisation.
A digital management platform for charities has launched a tool to help improve diversity and equality within the voluntary sector.
The Standard is in draft form and the Charity Excellence Framework is keen to hear views from those in the charity sector on its effectiveness.
It focuses on leadership and ethics, procedures, targets and outcomes. Specific issues covered include whether the charity has an up to date equality policy and a board member in place who leads on whistle-blowing.
It also looks at how well charities are able to respond sensitively and quickly to discrimination and sexual harassment complaints.
Recruitment procedures is another key focus. This includes looking at whether board level posts are advertised openly and that under-represented groups are actively encouraged to apply.
Another issue looked at is ensuring all staff recruitment uses communication channels and language that can effectively attract candidates from under-represented groups.
The Standard also encourages charities to ensure that no gender represents more than two thirds of board members.
Charity Excellence Framework Founder Ian McLintock said: “Although the charity sector is probably more diverse than the general population, there has been a long-recognised lack of diversity at board and senior management level. In response, the diversity diagnostics in the free Charity Excellence Framework digital platform have been used to create a draft charity Diversity Excellence Standard.”
He added: “There’s no workload involved, as the Charity Excellence Framework does this automatically and reports the result on its interactive dashboard. The underpinning results are individually linked to relevant resources, from across the web, and the report can be exported in action plan format.”
The Charity Excellence Framework launched in June 2018 to help trustee boards and senior teams within charities to reduce workload.
