Declan’s #‎scarselfie campaign raises confidence and cash

A 12-year-old boys photo sharing campaign to raise money for the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital has gained nationwide news coverage.

Declan McEntee’s #‎scarselfie appeal encourages people to post pictures of their scars to stop people feeling isolated and contribute much needed funds to the hospital where he has undergone 10 operations.

The campaign has been a hit, with coverage on ITV News and more than £6,000 raised so far.

People can donate to the charity in a few easy steps, simply text ‘SCAR10’ followed by the amount to 70070.


Charities have increasingly harnessed the social power of selfies since the runaway success of Cancer research UK’s #nomakeupselfie.

Other successful selfie campaigns include #smearforsmear by Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust and Age UK’ s #NotByMySelfie.


‘I want people to know they are not alone’

Declan told the Manchester Evening News: “Because I have scars, I sometimes feel conscious of what I look like or worry what others will think.

“Even though I’m nervous, I’m showing my scars because I want people to know they are not alone and that we should be proud of our scars and the stories of why they have them.

“I really hope this will help people feel more confident and that we can raise some money for surgical research at RMCH where they have helped me my whole life.”
