Focus Ireland shines a light on family homelessness with #InTheShadows campaign
Focus Ireland has created a social media campaign designed to show solidarity for those “living in the shadows” and raise funds to tackle family homelessness.
Focus Ireland, a charity working with people who are homeless or at risk of losing their homes in Ireland, has created a social media campaign designed to show solidarity for those “living in the shadows” and raise funds to tackle family homelessness.
According to the charity, over 1,500 children and their families are living in B&B’s and hotels. “These are the hidden homeless,” it said on its website.
Donate your shadow
The idea behind the social media campaign – which has the hashtag #InTheShadows – is for supporters to post a picture of their shadow on social media before nominating their friends to do the same.
According to the Irish Independent, the initiative has been launched by Sister Stanislaus Kennedy of Focus Ireland, who said: “People who are homeless are not always seen.”
She added: “It’s not just people sleeping rough, there are up to 5,000 people homeless in Ireland and the vast majority are in hostels or families stuck in a hotel room with their children for months.”
On the 16th October, which is the charity’s Shine a Light Night 2015, each donated #InTheShadows selfie will be projected onto the Christchurch Cathedral in Dublin.
How does it work?
Want to get involved and donate your shadow? The campaign can be broken down into three simple steps:
- Upload your shadow selfie to Twitter or Facebook alongside the following message: “I’m shining a light on family homelessness this October with Focus Ireland #InTheShadows”
- Text ‘SHINE’ to 50300 to donate €4 to Focus Ireland
- Nominate 3 or more friends to do the same.

A number of people have already joined the campaign and shared their shadow selfies online. Here are a couple of our favourite #InTheShadows Tweets so far:
