ICO opposes proposals to change regular text giving

Proposals to stop the need for charities to remind donors that they can cancel their regular text donations every month have been opposed by the Information Commissioners Office.

In a consultation, PhonepayPlus put forward the idea of cancelling the regular STOP text and replacing it with a SKIP text, allowing donors to skip a month. If three months were skipped consecutively, the donation would be cancelled.

However, data protection regular ICO wants the monthly ‘STOP’ option to continue. A spokesperson said: “We are disappointed to note that the intention is to move away from a method where consumers are more informed and in control and are frequently reminded of their ability to stop their donation subscriptions.”

PhonepayPlus said is considering the responses before making an announcement.
