A free toolkit has been developed by NCVO that’s designed to help charities plan, design and deliver internal digital skills programmes for staff.
NCVO has been building the digital skills and confidence of its staff since June 2015, in a programme called the Learning Lab. The newly-released toolkit – called Building a Digital Workforce – is based on that training and includes templates, examples, tips and resources that are all free to download, use and adapt (under Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International License).
Since the introduction of the Learning Lab in June 2015, the organisation has engaged 70 per cent of its current staff, with 95 per cent saying they feel more confident after attending a session.
Digital skills needed
The toolkit could be a very welcome roll-out for charities. According to the Lloyds Bank UK Business Digital Index, 58 per cent of charities lack basic digital skills. Despite this research showing that digitally mature charities are more than twice as likely to see an increase in funding, only 23 per cent of UK charities are investing in improving their employees’ digital skills.
