Teach First appoints digital entrepreneur as trustee


Teach First has announced the appointment of James Bilefield, digital entrepreneur, as its newest trustee.

Bilefield not only has experience in helping to develop leading technology based businesses across the globe, but also co-founded one of the UK’s first digital businesses, UpMyStreet and ran the global advertising technology company OpenX.

The new trustee advises both the UK Government and London Science Museum Group on digital transformation.

The new appointment coincides with the charity’s recruitment of its largest ever group to work in schools serving low-income communities. Just under 1,700 new graduates have joined the Teach First 2015 class, and the charity currently accounts for almost 25 per cent of all new trained teachers in schools serving low income communities.

Bilfield joins the charity’s current trustees, which include Chair Paul Drechsler CBE and Lord Andrew Adonis.

He said: “I truly believe that everyone deserves an excellent education. For this reason, I am both honoured and delighted to be taking on this important role at Teach First, a charity in whose vision and values I strongly believe.

“Teach First has gone from strength to strength in recent years.  Teaching in a challenging school is now one of the most prestigious options for the country’s best graduates and career changers. With new challenges on the horizon – including the charity’s expansion into coastal and dispersed areas and the need to boost the application of technology in education – I hope that I am able to help build on the success of the charity through my background in technology and digital communications.

“Working with such an impressive and important organisation, these are challenges that I look forward to addressing. I am also looking forward to meeting more of the wonderful people that make the charity what it is – Teach First teachers, ambassadors and employees.”
