UK charity Missing People has launched a new campaign #MissforMay which aims to raise vital funds and awareness by asking people to give up a luxury for the month to support families with missing members.
Every year, in the month of May, the charity holds a series of events and activities designed to highlight the 140,000 children and young people who go missing in the UK every year.
The #MissforMay appeal is the newest addition to a collection of events that the charity runs throughout “Forget-Me-Not Month”. Other events include “Miles for Missing People”, the charity’s flagship event on London’s Clapham Common on 2 May and “The Big Tweet for Missing Children”, held on International Missing Children’s Day, 25 May.
Sarah Godwin, a Family Representative and Trustee at the charity and the mother of Quentin Godwin who went missing in New Zealand in 1992, said: “Miss for May brings the different elements of the ‘missing’ scenario to a wider audience and focuses on the heartaches and upended lives experienced by those who have missing loved ones – my family included. Miss for May is giving many of us a chance to raise whatever sum of money we can and know that every penny and pound will help bring someone home or support a family desperate to see their loved ones again. Missing something you enjoy for a month is just a shadow compared to missing someone you love for years.”
The charity has developed a range of resources for those taking part in #MissforMay including a cheat token for the days when those taking part may find it too hard to miss out on their favourite luxury and medals that can be shared on social media to mark milestones throughout the month.
