ChangeTip, a service that allows micropayments in a variety of currencies to be made over social media, has launched a “tip redirect” feature so that transactions can be donated to charity.
ChangeTip have chosen to link up with bitcoin foundation BitGive which aims to use the bitcoin community to tackle global environmental and health causes; the foundation has charity partnerships with Save the Children, The Water Project and Medic Mobile amongst others.
ChangeTip said that many of its customers cannot or do not wish to accept tips for their services and as a solution decided that the best option would be to allow users to redirect their tips to charity.
“The two best-use cases for bitcoin are micropayments and charitable giving, because of low transaction fees and frictionless public sharing on social media,” explained Victoria van Eyk, head of community development at ChangeTip.
Connie Galippi, founder and executive director of the BitGive Foundation, added, “Bitcoin has made microdonations a reality, and ChangeTip makes it fun and easy using social media interactions. We are excited to see ChangeTip’s support for charity continue.”
The new feature was launched for use on Tuesday 10th February as part of #tippingtuesday and at present will redirect the funds to BitGive, although the company said it expects that new donation options will be added weekly.
