Government to launch Cyber Essentials Scheme

The Minister of State for Universities and Science, The Rt Hon David Willetts MP, will launch the new Cyber Essentials Scheme, at an event in London.  Developed by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) and CESG – the UK Government’s national authority for information assurance – the new scheme builds upon the ’10 Steps to Cyber Security’ published by the government in 2012 to help organisations and senior executives understand and implement a corporate risk programme.

The Cyber Essentials Scheme will identify the security controls that organisations must have in place within their IT systems and will also provide guidance for organisations regarding basic cyber hygiene.

Simon Hansford, Chief Technology Officer at Skyscape Cloud Services – one of the first organisations to adopt the scheme – has made the following comments:

“We fully support the aims of the Cyber Essentials Scheme and are delighted to be one of the first organisations to adopt the new initiative, which will help us to demonstrate our commitment to security to our customers – who are public sector organisations with considerable data protection requirements.

“It is evident that cyber crime is posing an increasingly serious threat to our economy and we believe that The Cyber Essentials Scheme will help to drive awareness of the growing risks and help organisations to mitigate the risks to their business and customers’ data.

“Indeed, as the recent eBay breach and warnings from the National Crime Agency that internet users have ‘two weeks’ to defend their computers have shown, businesses and individuals alike must be bolstering defences against the evolving cyber threats and government certainly has a role to play in supporting this.  With this in mind, we encourage our partners as well as other organisations and service providers to implement the requirements of the Cyber Essentials Scheme within their organisations.”
